the ethical move

Pledgees.

Since starting my business I’ve always been aware of the conflict between the idea of growth and the need for sustainability. Growth is inherently unsustainable. In nature, growth is part of a cycle that also includes death and decay. I don’t wish to grow my business beyond where it needs to be to sustain a reasonable living, and I absolutely don’t want to grow my business if it means working with clients whose ethics are misaligned with my own. Over the years, these values have led me to foster a small, local, and wonderful collection of clients, with whom I share some excellent and respectful working relationships.

I am making the ethical move because I feel concerned by the general acceptance of both covert and overt manipulation in marketing in vulnerable client niches.

We are taking this pledge because we believe in people and the planet, over profits. We want our customers to trust and respect us and to know that we understand what truly matters and that it is much, much more than money.

I am making the ethical move because I saw the difference in ethical and non-ethical selling when I sold encyclopedias door-to-door and ethical felt most empowering.

We only ever work with brands that have credible values, that we also share. We believe consumer choices are paramount to fixing our planet, which is why we’re committed to only promoting products with genuine, sustainable credentials.

I believe ethical and sustainable business should be the norm. I feel strongly against consumerism and greenwashing, and although consumers are becoming more aware of this I believe it shouldn’t be the consumers responsibility to dig for the truth to make the ethical choice, it should be our responsibility as a business to only offer ethical options, ones based on transparency, trust and honesty.

Since I decided to start my own business I have seen and been approached by so many manipulative, dishonest people and I’m tired of it. These ways of marketing practices, promising 4 to 6 figure revenue within a month, three or six, are unfortunately so common in today’s business world! I want to take a sustainable route, be authentic and truthful. I want to actually help other businesses and do it ethically.

I first learned about The Ethical Move when I worked as part of the Content Direction Agency team last year. I was already feeling like a lot of the tactics we (as copywriters) are taught to use are a bit sleazy. As someone with multiple psychology degrees, I definitely understand why they work. But I feel like just because something works doesn’t mean it’s right — or that it’s the best way to achieve a goal. I felt like there had to be a way for everyone (entrepreneurs and clients) to win — and for everyone to feel good about it. No high-pressure sales. No fudging the truth. No manipulating emotions. Just connecting people with solutions and tools that supported their goals — and helping my clients reach their goals in the process. So when I found out about The Ethical Move, I felt validated that the way I felt wasn’t weird, that I wasn’t letting my emotions get in the way of good business sense, and that I wasn’t alone! I’ve been trying my best to live by The Pledge ever since — and have even introduced some of my clients to it.

I am making the ethical marketing pledge because I am committed and 100% behind marketing that motivates and educates, rather than marketing that manipulates and misleads. If we create great products and services that serve a true purpose, then we have no need to pressure, coerce or deceive with our marketing.

I am making the ethical move because I want to make a difference in my industry, which historically has been based on unethical selling tactics.
