I am taking the pledge because for me it encapsulates the key principles of ethical marketing and gives a clear way to guide my thinking and direction with what I create and how I share it.

I was tired of having to work during the week for those companies that I demonstrate against on the weekends. That’s why I started my own business. My vegan advertising agency and print company “voice-design” has been standing on the same ethical foundation as myself for almost a quarter of a century now – and as all past, present and future employees. We stand up for human rights, animal rights and environmental protection, produce sustainably, fairly and vegan and regularly turn down orders and customers for ethical reasons.

I’ve worked mainly in the public sector and have seen areas where change should be made but the bureaucracies in place prevent this from happening. As a freelancer, I feel it is my responsibility to make change happen, rather than just talking about it.

I am making the ethical move because the post-pandemic world is ready for change. We’ve all suffered enough trauma without old-school marketing strategies trying to make us feel worse!

The online industry has made it seem “normal” to manipulate our audiences to get a sale. I want to create a safer, more transparent space for my audience (and myself!).

Marketing needs to move us forward as a society, not hold us back. It can normalise so many bad things. The acceptability of telling lies is a big part of that, but then there are also the microaggressions of the assumptions marketing often makes, or the failure to generally include people. I’ve always been in favour of using marketing for good. I want to redress imbalances, and promote quality that lasts, with products and services that do what they do well and without harm to people, animals, or the environment. As a copywriter and translator, I see flagging potential issues as an important part of my job. This includes unethical practices and a failure to communicate in an inclusive manner. It’s about educating, and as an external services provider, I’m usually in a uniquely powerful place to do that.

I want people to know that you can market from a place of generosity, honesty and connection. I want people to know that marketing can actually build community.

We are making the ethical move, because we believe in the economy for the common good. We think the social and ecological way, is the right way to do business. Ethical sustainability communication is an important part of our portfolio and we like to do ethical sales and marketing for our selfs as well.

I’m taking the pledge because as a business coach my industry is rife with practices and narratives that rub me up the wrong way, and I’m keen to show that slime and sleaze are not the route to success in coaching.

I am starting out as a copywriter and have felt uncomfortable with some of the practices I see. I want to affirm my commitment to fair and ethical communication without manipulation.
