We are making a pledge to The Ethical Move as a business as we do not believe in pressure-selling. We don’t like it done to us, so we wouldn’t do it to others.

Tracing advertising back to its roots is to traverse the line between manipulation and personal benefit. A great documentary turned book “Merchants of Doubt” shows the lengths to which companies go to undermine personal autonomy. With this in mind it’s the ambition of the Ethical Move we at etheco have no doubt is necessary in today’s overconsumptive environment. It’s a privilege to be associated with these aims and values by taking the pledge and recommend all to do the same!

The care economy has always been vulnerable to exploitation — by capitalism, by marketing culture, and by the very programs that promise to help healers, therapists, and coaches “scale.” I work with people who have been harmed by that landscape: by false urgency, inflated promises, and tactics that use their wounds to sell to them. Taking this pledge is an extension of the same commitment I hold in my practice: that the business of care must be built on trust, not manipulation. My clients deserve to encounter my work through honest, clear language — not manufactured scarcity or pressure — so they can make the choice that is actually right for them, in their own time, from their own wisdom. Ethical marketing isn’t just a business value for me; it’s a somatic one. The nervous system knows the difference between being seen and being sold to.

I am making the ethical move because in the greater context of so much that is UN ethical in the world world right now – and how business is done, how manipulative and predatory marketing is, I want to take my personal ethics a step further, and make a public stand for transparency and integrity, and honesty.

I am making the Ethical Move because I’m tired of the scarcity BS. I believe there is enough for everyone, and we can make more of an impact when we are willing to give freely and honestly in community. We don’t need to “keep up” — we need to expand our view and speak truth. I work primarily in the nonprofit sector, and trust is one of the main factors for success and long-term client relationships. I pledge to be honest and build trust with my clients, not inject fear or scarcity into their mindset.

Sustainability is our core value as a website & brand design studio. Internally, this means creating low carbon websites and rejecting the use of generative AI, but we are also dedicated to working with clients who actively practice the same mission. Leaving the planet better than we found it is the driving force behind our work.

I’ve been thinking more about the role design plays in shaping decisions especially at a time when people are actively questioning brands and where their money goes. Taking this pledge feels like a natural step toward being more intentional about the kind of work I put into the world.

The Baby Experience Ltd. works almost exclusively with parents-to-be and new parents. Therefore we are in touch with clients at a time of enormous vulnerability, doubt and confusion. When Lou and I set up The Baby Experience we pledged to each other to stick to the most ethical practice possible and to offer parents only evidence-based information. We promised each other we would not try to mislead parents by suggesting, for example, that we could wave some kind of magic wand to make their baby “sleep through the night” or that by prenatal preparation we could make the childbirth experience perfect. Taking your pledge will, I hope, make our position clear to prospective clients.
