Decolonizing marketing
June 24, 2021
We’ve been talking about the big picture a lot, recently. During our team meeting in April, Dimitra Meghawaty sparked a conversation that reminded us of our roots, the reason the ethical move exists in the first place: not just to feel better about marketing, but to break the cycle of consumerism. Combined with our deep dive into accessibility this signified an important turning point in who we are (becoming) as a movement. It led us to redefine how we can grow our movement: who it is really for, but is left out of the conversation, what a new standard for ethical marketing can look like, and what our pledge needs to become to create it. And, we can’t do this without you 👇👇👇
Accessibility thinking
May 28, 2021
We have been sinking deeper into accessibility, focusing on design, content, and the bigger picture conversation. The simple truth is that we all use the internet and online tools differently; and creating things that take our humanity into consideration makes for better content, better design, and better understanding of our needs. Techy things we’re doing to improve accessibility And now, the deep work begins. Changing our tech to make our content more accessible is a great start, but only the tiniest part of the much bigger conversation we need to have about our biases, how we relate to ‘ability’, what it means to take everyone into consideration as we are building/writing/creating. We can’t treat accessibility as an afterthought – that leaves most of the world’s population out of the conversation. This not a project to be checked off a list, but a life-long journey; and we’re doing it in conversation with you. Let us know what you’ve discovered!* *If this is all too daunting, please know that we are right there with you. I personally had some Big Learning to do in the last few weeks because I was not seeing the bigger picture and needed to be called forward. Share with us, knowing that we need your thoughts and opinions now more than ever.
Accessibility for everyone
April 21, 2021
This quarter we are taking a deep dive into accessibility; what it means to us, what we want to prioritize, and how we want to show up. It is a big task, so we are taking it one step at a time and will be sharing what we learn along the way as much as we can. Our first big step is re-creating our website using universal design principles — ie. to make it easy to use for the widest range of people. The universal design approach helps us to build an online environment that allows all users to experience value, and helps people who take in and process information differently to benefit from significantly more ease. If you haven’t been to our website in a while, here’s what you might notice first: Those are just a few of the changes, and there are many more below the surface, like code that enables people who don’t (or can’t) navigate via mouse to use assistive technologies (like a keyboard, joystick, or laser pointer) to check boxes on our forms. Accessibility is a journey, but hopefully sharing our steps will give you ideas on how to take your own steps. More accessibility for everyone! Which, of course, is the point.
Female by chance, feminist by choice
March 21, 2021
This International Women’s Day we are celebrating the fact that we are a team who, in the words of Sabine, are “female by chance and feminist by choice”. Since marketing is predominantly influenced by white/cis/hetero/male opinions, it’s truly remarkable to be part of a high-caliber marketing sisterhood, to learn and grow together as we flip tables all around us. Reflecting on the IWD theme ‘Choose to Challenge’, we of course recognise the need for our feminism to be intersectional if it is to make the difference we are hoping to create. We would love to hear of any resources you have found helpful on the topic of intersectional feminism for us to add to our resources section
A diverse + inclusive business
February 24, 2021
It’s Black History Month in the US. We believe Black history requires more than a month — so does Black present, and Black future. Which is why we discuss anti-racism and inclusion in every single team meeting, by asking ourselves these questions: This is a standing agenda item and one of our most fiercely held priorities. (The questions are based on a conversation with Adeline at thecommonsconsulting.comSome of the actions that have come out of this are our anti-racism commitment, our code of conduct, a deep dive into our web accessibility, and a team that is starting to look a lot less white.
New year, new moves
January 11, 2021
We made it to 2021! And things still seem the same. Our team meeting on Friday was a breath of fresh air amidst all of us dealing with our own version of the status quo that is making life challenging. We’re tackling the new year by combining the power of a deep need for things to be different with the fresh energy a new year brings to move forward even more purposefully – starting with introducing you to the amazing humans that have joined our team.
Building our foundation
