Marketing needs to move us forward as a society, not hold us back. It can normalise so many bad things. The acceptability of telling lies is a big part of that, but then there are also the microaggressions of the assumptions marketing often makes, or the failure to generally include people.
I’ve always been in favour of using marketing for good. I want to redress imbalances, and promote quality that lasts, with products and services that do what they do well and without harm to people, animals, or the environment.
As a copywriter and translator, I see flagging potential issues as an important part of my job. This includes unethical practices and a failure to communicate in an inclusive manner. It’s about educating, and as an external services provider, I’m usually in a uniquely powerful place to do that.
