Hello ethical movers!

How do we show up to do the work while taking care of ourselves and our loved ones?

(And by “the work,” we mean anything from how we make money to the things we do to challenge the status quo and build a just and equitable world.)

If feels like the world has been asking us that question a whole lot lately.

And the answer is never simple. It feels like there’s always a compromise, a sacrifice to be made.

But that’s a false notion we’ve been socialized to believe.

Under capitalism…

Slowing down and being less productive is disobedience.
Taking care of ourselves and others is countercultural.
Treating human beings with dignity and respect is revolutionary.

These concepts aren’t new… But they are hard to integrate into our lives because most of us need to be productive, at least some of the time, to make money in order to survive.

At The Ethical Move, we’ve been grappling with this—on a personal and organizational level.

This year has been a season of reflection.

During this time, we’ve had to identify our priorities. Many of us on the team realized we needed to slow down and change how we do things. For some, it has even meant pressing pause or stepping back altogether.

And we encouraged each other to take these steps, to make room for exploring what we need, because our wellbeing is a priority. (Especially as a team of volunteers!)

In the world we’re striving for, organizations exist to serve people. Not the other way around.

The ethical move news.

To usher in this new season of The Ethical Move, we have an update to share:

Alice Karolina, our founder, has scaled back her role and responsibilities.

Stewardship of The Ethical Move is now being held by Jeffrey Shiau.

a note from the steward.

Hiya!

Firstly, can we take a moment to celebrate Alice?!

Alice, without your vision and hard work, TEM would not exist. But it’s not only what you’ve produced that is important, it’s how you did it. You’ve led us with integrity and kindness… it’s your heart that has shaped what TEM is all about. 💖

I’m so honored to be the Steward of TEM, and I hope to build on your legacy!

With this piece of news, I’m sure many of you are wondering what this means for The Ethical Move.

Practically speaking, this doesn’t change much. We’re a collaborative team where everyone has a say in the direction of the organization.

My responsibilities are mainly to hold space for the big picture, oversee the projects that help move us towards our goals, support team members in their work, and act as the “face” of TEM.

An update on TEMC.

As you might know, we’ve hosted a digital space called The Ethical Move Community (TEMC) since August of last year. This summer, despite our best efforts (and life throwing us some curveballs), we realized that it would take more energy and resources than we had available to keep it running.

So we decided that it was time to shut TEMC down.

(I’d love to share some of the things we’ve learned about hosting a digital community in the future.)

So what can you expect from us going forward?

While TEMC will no longer exist, we will continue hosting public events. We’re currently working on curating our event calendar for the rest of 2023, which will include workshops and networking events.

We’ll also have more capacity to research and write articles about ethical marketing for our website and blog.

To cover our operational costs, we’ll need your support, so we’re working on launching a membership for patrons to support our work going forward.

More details about each of these to come! Stay tuned!

Pledgee highlights.

I believe that centering ethical actions is a key part of my job as an entrepreneur. We need more examples of how ethics and business can co-exist. As a trauma-informed coach, being ethical is key to being able to fully see and help my clients.
—Taji Torrilhon, www.tajimarie.com
As a business owner for over 17 years, I have always put my customers first. I believe that treating customers fairly and honestly is essential for building and maintaining a successful business.
—Elaine Scott, www.relovablepets.co.uk
Seeing how social and networking platforms and marketing agencies prey on compassionate people with unethical outreach messages hurts my heart. I want to be different. I need to be different for my conscience and as a part of my legacy.
